Furthermore, the assist gas jet is expelled through a converging-diverging nozzle (M- 2) to obtain gas jets with higher momentum. This kind of nozzles allows increasing the supply pressure in order to accelerate the gas flow up the supersonic regime without disturbance of the gas flow as shown in Figure 3b. Therefore, it is possible have a higher capability of dragging molten material [12-13].
Experimental setup
In order to test the performance of the self designed cutting head, we have processed difficult materials to be cut by melt shearing laser cutting technique, namely two commercial aluminium alloys from the 2xxx and 7xxx series. Their chemical composition and thickness were summarized in Table I.
The laser radiation for the experiments was provided by a Rofin Sinar CO2 slab laser. The processing parameters used in all the experiments figure in Table 2.
The experiments were made by means of a cutting head assisted by an off-axis Laval nozzle. Two jets are used in this experimental setup: one to protect the focusing lens from splashes (Argon at 4 bar) and other, in supersonic regime M>2 (Argon at 8 bar), to drag the molten material.

Cutting tests showed a superior performance of the self-designed system from the point of view of the assist gas dynamics. Results indicate a higher performance of the assist gas using this new system from the point of view of production rate and cut quality.
